Can Extreme Climates Affect the Lifespan of Your Spark Plugs?

Spark plugs are a critical part of the engine every time you want to drive. They are what literally light the spark in each engine cylinder, igniting the air-fuel mix so the engine can start. And while, with regular maintenance, your spark plugs would be replaced every 30,000 to 100,000 miles depending on your specific vehicle, damage can be done that may require them to be replaced sooner, especially in Arizona’s summer heat.

Common Spark Plug Wear and Tear

Spark plugs encounter degradation through normal use. By being located in the engine, where there is constant vibration, the plug insulators can be worn down or even fracture. The engine heat can also wear down or melt the plug electrodes, even without the added heat of desert summers. The high voltage processed through the plugs can eventually wear them down, and deposits can build up on the insulator and electrodes from many firings over time.

Luckily, a damaged or failing spark plug will show signs to you, the driver, that something is wrong. Keep an eye out for issues starting your car, as well as engine stalls. Your check engine light may also turn on.

How Summer Treats Your Spark Plugs

Extreme Heat

In the extreme heats of an Arizona desert summer, almost everything — plants, air conditioners, people — feels the strain, and that includes our cars and car parts. With temperatures over 100℉, the already hot engine gets hotter. Because hot air is less dense than cold air, the air-fuel mixture may shift, making the spark plugs’ ignition more difficult, especially when the plugs are dirty. If vehicles are left out in the sun for long periods of time, both parked or driving, this issue can be exacerbated. It can lead to engine stalls, engine cuts, and misfires, even when already on and idling or accelerating.

Damage Prevention

While you can’t stop the heat, you can assist your car and your spark plugs to prevent major damage. Auto Correct’s technicians always encourage staying on top of your regular inspections and scheduled maintenance. This will help you recognize signs of wear and damage before they become dangerous, and give you a chance to make fixes early. You can also invest in high quality spark plugs and related engine components to give the system a longer lifespan. Finally, as much as we love to let the car cool off before we get in to drive, leaving your car idling too frequently can lead to carbon build up on the plugs, so be aware of how often you’re doing so.
