How to Know You Have Steering and Suspension Problems

If you’re dealing with a bumpy ride or a difficult steering wheel, you may have suspension or steering issues. Here’s what to look for, and what to do about it.

Symptoms of Steering Issues

Your steering wheel needs to be in tip-top shape to ensure your safety in your car. So if things feel off, get your steering system checked ASAP. Here are some signs of steering problems:

  • You have to “fight” the steering wheel for control

  • Your car drifts unless you’re gripping the wheel

  • The wheel shakes

  • There is “play” in the steering wheel — meaning the wheel can be turned more than 1-1.5 inches without your tires rotating

  • You have to work too hard to turn

Symptoms of Suspension Issues

Your suspension keeps your car from bouncing around with bumps in the road, giving you a smooth ride. These are the signs you need to have your suspension system checked:

  • The car has sunk in the front, back, or one corner

  • You can feel every bump in the surface of the road

  • When you turn, you feel like the car will tip over

  • When braking, your vehicle tips forward or falls back

Poor Steering and Suspension are Dangerous

A bumpy, bouncy ride is obnoxious, but steering and suspension problems can actually be dangerous. A large bump in the road can make you lose control of your car or throw you into another lane. And bad steering could cause you to drift into oncoming traffic or have problems moving out of the way of things in the road. So it’s not just about being jostled around or gripping your wheel — steering and suspension issues can be life or death scenarios.
