How to Maintain Your Car Battery

Your battery is a crucial part of your car, but most of us tend to neglect it until our car won’t start. Here are some tips for maintaining your battery so you can always count on it!

Get it Checked Regularly

Have your mechanic check your battery for wear and tear, like corrosion on the terminals or buildup. Have it cleaned, or clean it yourself with a baking soda and water mixture and an old toothbrush.

Keep the Battery Clean and Dry

Moisture and dirt are damaging to your battery. Regularly clean off any grime and consider using a battery pad or an anti-corrosion spray.

Secure it in its Bracket

Make sure your battery is tightly secured within its bracket. A loose battery can vibrate, which causes damage to the internal battery components.

Go for Longer Drives

Frequent short drives don’t give your battery enough time to fully charge. If you can, periodically take your car for a longer drive to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.

Insulate in Extreme Temperatures

Hot weather causes fluids to evaporate, and cold weather can drain the battery. Insulation maintains a stable temperature and extends your battery’s life. Check with your local auto shop to see if your car model comes with battery insulation, and how to safely insulate it if it doesn’t.

Get in a Battery Charger

For cars that are parked for extended periods, invest in a battery maintainer or trickle charger. These machines keep your battery charged without overcharging, so you know your car is ready to go when you are.

Turn Off Headlights and Interior Lights

This may seem obvious, but it bears repeating: always double that you’ve turned off all headlights, interior lights, and electronic accessories before exiting your car. We’ve all left on a light and returned to a dead battery!

Replace When Needed

No matter how well you care for your battery, its lifespan is finite. Keep an eye out for signs of a weak battery like slow engine crank, dim lights, or dashboard warning lights. It could be time to get it replaced.

If you want your car to start when you need it and run smoothly, you need to keep your battery in good shape. Having battery trouble you can’t seem to fix, or just need a second opinion? Make an appointment with Auto Correct today.
