Signs Your Car Engine May Not Be Healthy

We all know that the engine is one of the most important parts of a car. So keeping it healthy is vital. Here are problem signs to look out for to ensure your engine stays in good shape.

Signs of Engine Trouble

Check Engine Light

This may sound obvious, but your check engine light turning on is a sign that you may have an engine problem. While it might not indicate a major issue, get your car checked just in case.

Power Loss or Frequent Stalling

A loss of overall power is a sign that your engine is struggling, and cars that stall often, especially when idling, are dealing with malfunctioning engines. Take your car into the auto shop if you encounter either of these issues.

Knocking Noise

If you hear a knocking sound while driving, your engine’s oil is likely severely low. But it could also be an indicator of other engine issues like worn bearings or problems with the air/fuel mixture. No matter the origin, a knocking noise should be inspected right away.

Overheating, Smoking, or Steaming

If your car overheats or is emitting smoke or steam, that’s a sure sign of engine issues. Stop driving and seek assistance immediately.

Other Signs

There are tons of symptoms that may be connected to engine issues — more than we can list here! But a few others worth including are: a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, low coolant levels, coolant leaks, and a clogged radiator. If you experience these problems, have your vehicle inspected.

When to Head to the Auto Shop

Some of the signs we’ve just mentioned can be the results of temporary factors, like cold weather, road conditions, or severe sun exposure. But assuming these kinds of things are causing your problems (and that they will soon be resolved) is a bad idea. Too often people believe their issues will simply go away, only to find out it’s major engine trouble. Don’t wait. It’s better to have your problems diagnosed now than to put it off until they are far worse.
