Understanding Oil Changes, Step-by-Step

Ah, the humble oil change: we’ve all heard of it, but what really goes into it? Here’s how we do it, step by step.

  1. Lift the Car

First things first — we’ve got to raise the vehicle off the ground. We need to get under it so that we can remove the undertray and reach the drain plug.

  1. Take Off the Drain Plug and Drain the Old Oil

Time to remove all that old oil! We place a receptacle under the car to collect the oil, then we remove the drain plug and let it flow for as long as it takes to empty out.

  1. Replace the Oil Filter and Drain Plug

We take off the old oil filter, change it out for a new one, and replace the drain plug, being careful not to overtighten.

  1. Put in the New Oil

Let’s replace that oil! We first put the undertray back and lower the car. We’ll open the hood, remove the oil cap, and use a funnel to fill the engine with the right amount of oil for your vehicle.

  1. Check the Oil Levels

Then we do a final check: we test the oil levels with a dipstick, and if the levels are right, you’re good to go.
